Illustrative Market Structure Review: Trend vs Range
How our market-analysis articles are structured, using an illustrative example: identifying trend and range conditions, key zones and invalidation — without predictions or signals.
Illustrative example using delayed, historical-style data. Not live prices and not a trading signal.
About this analysis
This article demonstrates the structure we use for market-analysis posts. All levels and scenarios below are illustrative and are not live market data. They are designed to teach a process, not to suggest a trade.
Step 1: Define the higher-timeframe context
Begin with the four-hour or daily chart. Ask a single question: Is price making higher highs and higher lows, lower highs and lower lows, or neither?
In our illustrative example, the higher timeframe shows a sequence of lower highs, suggesting sellers had the upper hand over the observed period.
Step 2: Mark the zones that matter
- Upper zone: the area where the last two rallies stalled.
- Lower zone: the area where the last decline paused.
Price between these zones is in a "decision area" where noise often dominates.
Step 3: Describe scenarios, not predictions
| Scenario | What we would observe | What it might mean |
|---|---|---|
| Rejection from upper zone | Long upper wicks, closes back inside range | Range conditions continue |
| Close above upper zone | Strong body closes, retest holds | Structure shift possible |
| Break below lower zone | Momentum candles, no quick recovery | Downtrend continuation possible |
Step 4: State what would invalidate the view
Every analysis should say what would prove it wrong. Here, a sustained move above the upper zone would invalidate the "sellers in control" description.
Step 5: Risk notes
- Short-duration OTC feeds can behave differently from external markets.
- Low-liquidity sessions produce unreliable breakouts.
- Analysis is not personalised advice — apply your own risk rules.
